I don't ski but I'm familiar with the skier's lament that fog eats snow. I've watched hundreds of presentations and can tell you that inhibitions eat success. When you’re inhibited you are reluctant to speak in a bigger voice, or be theatrical. You're monotone. You don't tell stories. You're a lot less animated.
Why does that happen? I don't know but in workshops they’ve found that people present more effectively when everyone is wearing a mask. People are more willing to emote when they have some anonymity.
It’s difficult to simply ask people to turn their inhibitions on and off. But, you can be more sensitive to your own inhibitions and how they’re impacting your presentation. Most of us can become better presenters just by mastering certain basic skills. What makes it difficult are those pesky inhibitions.
